Get yourself’s a cup of tea, or coffee because today’s post will be long, but worth it. As you will see, I have a lot to say about aging because studying aging has been one of my lifelong passions.
Here’s are a few poor beauty habits that will age you:
Not wearing sunscreen
Ninety percent of skin aging is caused by the sun. Even on cloudy days, you should be wearing at least 30 SPF. 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays can pass through clouds, which will penetrate into your skin.
Always wear your sunnies
Wearing your sunglasses will stop you from squinting. All the repetitive squinting will create and reinforce crows feet.
Please stay away from tanning beds. It can cause premature skin cancer, change the skin texture and age you faster than a Huda Beauty makeup tutorial video.
I know my friends in Europe don’t want to read this, but nothing will age you faster than smoking. Smoking affects the blood vessels, which deliver oxygen and nutrients to the entire body. When the skin is deprived of these essential nutrients, changes begin to develop, even at an early age. It’s basically poison for your face!
Sleeping on your face
Sleep wrinkles are real. If you continuously sleep on your face, then the lines will stay permanently. Try sleeping on your back. I am a side sleeper, so this is hard for me too, but if you must sleep on your side use a satin, or silk pillow. Resting on a smoother surface will help reduce the appearance of sleep lines and the formation of wrinkles on your face.
Poor Skin Care
After a bender, no one has the energy to wash off the red carpet makeup. However, pollution, oil, and grime will clog your pores. As you know, your face rejuvenates while you sleep and it cannot do this process if your face is dirty.
Looking down at your phone
Have you heard of Tech Neck? Tech Neck is caused by too much time bent over a phone or laptop. Your neck will become saggy and lazy from this constant motion. The solution: hold your phone at eye level when you look at it. Also, try exfoliatiing your neck three times a week, apply your moisturizer on your neck and use a Jade Roller three to four times a week.
Surprise, surprise! One of the many culprits is sugar. Sugar breaks down collagen, the springy substance that makes your skin look plump, youthful, and lifted. Also, sugar can weaken the immune system, and a suppressed immune system is bad at fighting off bacteria. Bacteria clogged in pores creates pimples. It also affects water binding, so your skin looks less perky and bouncy, and doesn’t appear as oxygenated. The skin becomes sallow, lackluster and you get those unwanted dark circles. Then there is alcohol, which is dehydrating because your kidneys have to work harder to remove excess water from your system. It also prevents the production of vasopressin, an antidiuretic hormone that the body uses to absorb water.
Drinking from a straw
A shout out to Zhanna who told me Monday that drinking from a straw causes smoker upper lip lines. When drinking out of a straw, the movement of the mouth area that you have to make will encourage the breakdown of collagen and elasticity more quickly, causing unnecessary wrinkles and lines, Oh, and it’s not just straws, water bottles are also offenders now.
Holding anger and grudges
Another shout out to my world-famous artist friend Ekhaterina Savchenko. She explains that when you are angry, or are holding on to grudges your body is rigid, so it makes your body less able to heal. Worst yet when you are depressed your cells are not regenerating at an optimal level. The body can heal itself, but it must be relaxed.
Aging is inevitable, but with proper skin care, it won’t be so dramatic if we stop bad habits in their tracks now we can age gracefully.
