Tech day Sunday – You Can Now Stop “random weirdos” comments on your Instagrams

This week Instagram announced a new feature allowing users to restrict comments to people you follow, people who follow you, or both, as opposed to the maximalist “everyone” setting. In the Settings menu, under Comments, just tap “Allow Comments From” to set your preferred setting.

Also, there is another option that allows you to block comments from individual users. Below is the guide to show you how both of these options work.

Lastly, they also rolled out another change that lets users anonymously report live videos in which someone might be attempting to harm, either to themselves or others.

Note: These screenshots were captured in the Instagram app on iOS.

Limit Commenting to Specific Users

Step 1: Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Step 2: Tap the gear icon near the top-right corner of the screen.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap “Comments” under the “Settings” heading.

Step 4: Tap “Everyone” next to “Allow Comments From.”

Step 5: Tap the circle next to the option you’d like to select. By default, everyone with an Instagram account will be able to comment on your posts, but you can also choose from three other options: “People You Follow and Your Followers,” “People You Follow” and “Your Followers.” The app tells you how many people are included in each group. Note: You can return to this screen in the future if you ever wish to change this setting.

Block Comments From Specific Users

Keep in mind that when you block comments from a user, the user won’t be added to your overall blocked users list, and they’ll still be able to see and interact with your posts. They’ll also still be able to add new comments to your posts, but since they’re on your blocked commenters list, only they will be able to see the new comments they share going forward. To be clear, the user won’t know they’ve been added to your blocked commenters list.

With that said, here’s how to block comments from specific users.

Step 1: Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Step 2: Tap the gear icon near the top-right corner of the screen.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap “Comments.”

Step 4: Tap “0 People” next to “Block Comments From.”

Step 5: Tap the Search bar and search for the user(s) you’d like to add to your blocked commenters list.

Step 6: Tap “Block” next to the desired user(s).

If you ever wish to remove a user from your blocked commenters list, repeat Steps 1-4 above, tap “Unblock” next to the desired user and tap “Unblock” on the confirmation menu that appears.
