In 1998 with only $100 in my purse I arrived in New York. I was told by the modeling agency I worked for at the time that I would have an apartment. However, when I arrived, the building was bought by a developer, and they were ending all of the tenant’s leases in order to convert the space into retail. I had no clue how I was going to survive in such an intimidating city. I couch surfed for months. Through the random acts of kindness of friends, photographers, strangers, boyfriends, and the agency I worked for I was able to have a place to sleep. They say New Yorker’s are tough people, but I disagree. They opened up their hearts and homes to me. Today, I live in a beautiful high-rise penthouse overlooking the city that has blessed me in so many ways.
