The Majesty of Castles in Europe

On various trips to Europe, I never took any castles tours.

However, on my last trip to Cardiff, Wales, and London I decided to fulfill the inner Disney kid in me and visit various castles.

My first stop was Cardiff Castle in Wales. Cardiff Castle is a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion located in the city center of Cardiff, Wales. The original motte and bailey castle was built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort.

Inside the castle apartments.  These ceilings are made out of real gold.

From 1866 the 3rd Marquess employed the genius architect William Burges to transform the Castle lodgings. Within gothic towers he created lavish and opulent interiors, rich with murals, stained glass, marble, gilding and elaborate wood carvings. Each room has its own special theme, including Mediterranean gardens and Italian and Arabian decoration.

This is the largest castle in Whales!

The castle was constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan, and saw extensive fighting between Gilbert and his descendants and the native Welsh rulers.  It has the most elaborate water defences in all Britain – it occupies around 30 acres, and is the second largest castle in Britain.  It is famous for having introduced concentric castle defences to Britain and for its large gatehouses.

The castle security does not allow pictures to be taken inside the castle, which is unfortunate because it was so incredible!

My last tour was Dover Castle and the White Cliffs.

Dover Castle

Dover Castle is a medieval castle in Dover, Kent, England. It was founded in the 11th century and has been described as the “Key to England” due to its defensive significance throughout history. It is the largest castle in England.

Thank you! 😘 I have been to Versailles many times. My father is French, so he would take me to Versailles whenever we visited París. I was there a couple of years ago. It’s one of my favorite places in the world. xx

I have visited so many castles in the UK over the years! I just love doing that, visiting castles, palaces and grand estates… I think Dover castle was the first one I ever visited way back in 1991 🙂 how time flies… Many castle visits have followed over the decades!
